Polycystic ovaries (PCOS) in Chinese medicine
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a syndrome found in 5% to 10% of all women of reproductive age (20-40 years).
The ovaries are the female pelvic reproductive organs that house the ova. Polycystic ovaries are characterized by being relatively large (1.5 to 3 times) and contain a large number of follicles or small cysts. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled blisters that are created when the follicle in the ovary does not release the egg.
The main symptoms of the syndrome are:
- A typical appearance of multiple follicles or small cysts in size in the ovary.
- High blood levels of male hormones (androgens) such as testosterone and excess male hormone symptoms – such as excessive hair appearance in the face, chest, abdomen and thighs, acne and oily skin, thinning hair and baldness in the forehead, diabetes, excess insulin production and insensitivity to insulin.
- Irregular menstruation, rare menstrual periods, or a complete absence of menstruation and / or irregular bleeding.
- Little of or absence of ovulation.
- Infertility.
- Pelvic pain lasting longer than six months.
- Disturbances in lipid levels, such as high or low levels of cholesterol and high triglycerides.
- Hypertension.
- Excess weight and obesity.
The syndrome has negative effect on fertility, since it is associated with ovulation disorder. Some women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome although may have regular menstruation, still do not ovulate or have trouble conceiving.
Chinese medicine and Polycystic ovaries:
In contrast to Western medicine, in Chinese Medicine there is certainly much to offer for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as in acupuncture treatments combined with dietary guidelines, Chinese herbs and supplements. Within 3 months (usually) significant improvement can be seen: restore menstruation, greatly improve the skin, lose weight, cleanse the uterus and restore it to a natural and balanced function.
